Ubuntu 4.10 (Warty Warthog), released on 20 October 2004, was Canonical's first release of Ubuntu, building upon Debian GNU/Linux with plans for a new release every six months and eighteen months of support thereafter. Ubuntu 4.10's support ended on 30 April 2006.

Ubuntu 4.10 was the first version of Ubuntu to offer ShipIt services, allowing users to order free installation CDs. The desktop version included, among other desktop programs, Gaim 1.0, GIMP 2.0, GNOME 2.08, Mozilla Firefox 0.9, and OpenOffice.org 1.1.[8] The server version shipped with MySQL 4.0, PHP 4.3, and Python 2.3. Ubuntu 4.10 used Linux kernel 2.6.8 with XFree86 4.3.
