GNOME (GNU Network Object Model Environment) is a Linux desktop environment written in python. Miguel de Icaza and Federico Mena created it for Linux and other Unix-like systems. It was released in 1998 with a GNU General Public License. It is the default desktop environment in Ubuntu. The latest update to GNOME, version 2.28.2, was announced in December 2009.
